  • Airfare is not included. All flights to and from the tour are the traveler's responsibility to arrange independently.

  • Cancellations within 7 days of booking are eligible for a full deposit refund. After the grace period, 50% of the deposit is forfeited. No refunds are issued on or after the final payment date.

  • We strongly recommend purchasing a comprehensive travel protection plan prior to departure.

  • Final payment is due 120 days before departure and must be paid by check.

  • Participants must be able to walk independently over uneven terrain for extended periods. Tours are not wheelchair accessible.

  • A valid U.S. passport book is required for all international travel. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date and have at least 4 blank pages.

Depart for Tokyo

Leave the states and head to Japan.

Day 2

Arrive in Tokyo

Our local guide will meet us at the airport and transfer us to our hotel in Tokyo. The rest of the evening is yours to settle in, rest, and shake off the flight — though if you're feeling up to it, the neighborhood around our hotel is worth a first look.

Day 3

Tokyo’s Heritage & Traditions

Today we discover the quieter side of a city known for its energy. We begin at Hama-rikyu Gardens, a tranquil 17th-century retreat framed on all sides by modern skyscrapers, then continue to Senso-ji, Tokyo's oldest temple, approached along the shops and food stalls of Nakamise Street. We close the day at Meiji Jingu Shrine, set within a forest of more than 100,000 trees and dedicated to Emperor Meiji — a fitting end to a day spent in old Tokyo.

Day 4

Modern Tokyo

From ancient to cutting edge. We step into the immersive digital world of the TeamLab Borderless Museum, where the artwork moves around and responds to you. Next, we ascend Tokyo Skytree for panoramic views stretching across the city and, on a clear day, all the way to Mt. Fuji. We finish at Shibuya Crossing, the busiest intersection in the world and one of Tokyo's great spectacles.

Day 5

Free Day in Tokyo

A full free day to explore Tokyo at your own pace. Some travelers head to Tokyo Disneyland, others take a day trip out to Mt. Fuji, and others spend the day shopping in Ginza or wandering the backstreets of neighborhoods like Yanaka and Shimokitazawa. Your guide is happy to help you plan the day around whatever interests you most.

Day 6

Osaka

On arrival, we visit Osaka Castle, the city's defining landmark, with its reconstructed keep set above stone ramparts and moats. In the evening we head to Dotonbori, Osaka's neon-lit riverside district, famous for its street food and its reputation as the heart of Japan's kitchen.

Day 7

Kyoto’s Cultural Treasures

Today we travel to Kyoto, Japan's imperial capital for over a thousand years. We walk through the towering stalks of the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and visit the neighboring Tenryu-ji Temple and its celebrated garden. The afternoon brings us to Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, mirrored in the pond at its feet, and to Nijo Castle, home of the Tokugawa shoguns. We return to Osaka in the evening.

Day 8

Nara & Fushimi Inari Shrine

We travel to Nara, Japan's first permanent capital, to visit Todai-ji Temple — home to a 49-foot bronze Buddha and one of the largest wooden structures in the world — and the lantern-lined paths of Kasuga Taisha Shrine, where the park's famously tame deer roam freely. On the return journey, we stop at Kyoto's Fushimi Inari Shrine and its endless corridor of vermilion torii gates climbing the mountainside.

Day 9

Hiroshima & Miyajima Island

This morning we board the bullet train to Hiroshima, where we visit the Peace Memorial Park and Museum — a moving and thoughtfully presented account of the city's history and its message of peace. From there we take a short ferry to Miyajima Island to see the famous floating Torii Gate of Itsukushima Shrine, which appears to rise straight out of the sea at high tide. We return to Osaka in the evening.

Departure

After breakfast we transfer to the airport for our flight home, bringing your journey through Japan to a close.
